Dorset Epilepsy Service Team is made up of two epilepsy specialist nurses and a consultant neurologist with a special interest in epilepsy. We also have admin support.

Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the world and affects 456,00 people in the UK, of all ages and from all walks of life. It is estimated that 70% of the population with epilepsy in the UK could be seizure free with optimal treatment. Currently only 52% of the population of people with epilepsy are seizure free. 1,000 people every year in the UK die of epilepsy related causes, 370 of those deaths are young adults or children. 400 of the deaths per year are avoidable.

Dorset epilepsy Service gives people over the age of 16 (with epilepsy) the support and education they need to manage their condition. We provide this support through the following:
  • A telephone advice line for patients, carers and health professionals
  • Dedicated Epilepsy Clinic for people who present with a first seizure or complex epilepsy
  • Dedicated Nurse-led clinic held at Poole Hospital NHS Trust and Dorchester NHS Trust
  • Working with both Primary Care Trusts. The National Society for epilepsy and epilepsy Action to involve the public to help shape the service to patient needs and also to set up support groups around Dorset
  • Joint working with general practitioners, Practice and Community Nurses, the Prison Service, hospital inpatient services (including accident and emergency departments) and the ambulance service
  • Linking in with new video Telemetry Service at Poole Hospital
